Its subject matter is the history of European civilization in the 20th century, primarily in the context of communist totalitarianism. The author focuses not on events as such, but on their historical meaning, which is inseparable from the moral issues of good and evil. Popovych emphasizes that the key secrets of the past century lie not so much in facts or political strategies as in an adequate understanding of historical phenomena. Against this backdrop, he analyzes the controversial issues of Ukrainian history — from the Central Rada, the Hetmanate, and the Directory to the “Executed Renaissance,” the Holodomor, the Great Terror, World War II, and the activities of the UPA, as well as the fate of culture in the Ukrainian SSR, the diaspora, and the period of perestroika. All these issues are interpreted in a broad civilizational context.

CONTENTS

Instead of an introduction

Chapter 1. Its author, Orthodox priest Stepan Yarmus, emphasizes that until the publication of his work, Yurkevych remained a little-studied figure. In particular, Yarmus notes that he managed to find 10 books by Yurkevych in libraries in London, the Vatican, and Moscow. According to Yarmus, the research tradition of studying Yurkevych was initiated by Dmytro Chyzhevskyi, but his study was never published. One of the important sources for understanding Yurkevych's work is an article by Volodymyr Solovyov, a student of Yurkevych, who described his teacher as a representative of the typical Ukrainian way of thinking.

CONTENTS

From the author

Dedication

Pamfil Danylovych Yurkevych

I. Havryliv analyzes Gadamer's concept of conversation as a central element of the hermeneutic process, which arises from the structure of Socratic dialogue and encompasses the interaction of the subject with the text, tradition, and other interpreters. Karl-Otto Apel's criticism of this concept and Gadamer's response to it are analyzed separately. Considerable attention is paid to Gadamer's appeal to poetry, in particular the work of Paul Celan, as a way of approaching the inexpressible. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that philosophical hermeneutics can serve as a methodology for the humanities.
2025-09-08T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/613Silence and Punishment In Krytyka, 11 (61), 2002, p. 24.2025-09-08T18:30:20+00:00Marius Ivaškevičiussententiae2000@gmail.com
The article presents the author's understanding of the role and essence of the intellectual. Паннекук критично розглядає погляди Герберта Спенсера, спроби використання дарвінізму для легітимації капіталістичного ладу та спростовує натуралістичні обґрунтування соціального дарвінізму. The author shows that despite external differences between the systems, both countries face similar challenges: insufficient funding, problems of academic integrity, and the need to align scientific training with labor market requirements. Bohachevska analyzes the American pragmatic and localized approach to educational reform, contrasting it with the Ukrainian desire to create a comprehensive concept for transforming the education system. The study pays particular attention to the phenomenon of the «American way» as an alternative to ideologically colored models. The author also critically reflects on the risks associated with the ideologization of the educational process and warns against reducing complex pedagogical tasks to abstract slogans.
2025-09-08T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/614Response to M. The author begins his research with the etymology of the word and establishes two understandings of politics: 1) as a science, theory, and 2) as practice and creative action. The work distinguishes between the two concepts of «politics as a science» and «the science of the state». Politics as a science oriented toward what ought to be — toward shaping the future, while the science of the state studies existing state phenomena.

Furthermore, the author distinguishes between the concepts of «state» and «society» and traces their historical development and their influence on the understanding of the concept of «politics».

Ultimately, Levynskyi defines politics as a social struggle for the existence and preservation of national culture and emphasizes that the establishment of a nation‑state is a critically important goal of politics for oppressed peoples.
2025-09-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/601The Babylonian captivity of democracy In Krytyka, No. 1-2 (63-64), 2003, pp. 15 16.2025-09-06T12:58:05+00:00Myroslav Popovychsententiae2000@gmail.com
The article examines the United States' policy toward Iraq in 2002 from an ethical and philosophical perspective. In particular, Verloka highlights the shortcomings of a number of publications and provides a detailed analysis of the activities of the publishing house «Dukh i Litera», positively distinguishing it from others. In the first section, the author analyzes the concept of «nationality», examining its elements – language and culture. The work also analyzes historical types of nationality and presents the author's vision of the prospects for this phenomenon in the context of socialist ideas. Levynskyi rejects the concept of a single universal state, arguing that the historical progress of humanity is ensured by the differentiation of national languages and cultures.

The second section examines the genesis of the state and its main historical types. The author pays particular attention to the presentation of key theories of state justification, in particular the ideas of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. The relationship between the state and nationality is examined through the prism of different forms of statehood: the nation state, the state of nationalities (federal model), and the imperialist state.

The concluding part of the work presents reflections on socialism, which, according to Levynskyi, is called upon to realize the national will of each people. Only under such conditions is true brotherhood of peoples possible, and cosmopolitanism acquires meaningful content.
2025-09-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/602Clothes for a book (Cover for a book) In Krytyka, No. 6 (32), 2000, pp. 14-15.2025-09-06T13:37:54+00:00Liudmyla Taransententiae2000@gmail.com
The article is devoted to the issue of visual design in works of Ukrainian fiction. Kateryna Botanova refers to technophobic discourse, presenting the concepts of virtual reality by J. Baudrillard, W. McDougall, and S. Žižek. Using the theories of the mentioned philosophers, the author notes that the phenomenon of the “Internet” is wrongly identified with other phenomena such as «virtual reality», «computer», «interface», and so on, due to their technological similarity. Instead, the article presents a view of this phenomenon as a mimetic reality — an imperfect imitation rather than a separate cyberspace. According to her observations, Ukrainian scholars tend to reject the latest approaches, which can be explained by their fear of metaphoricality and the legacy of the Soviet literary tradition based on the principles of objectivity and historicism.

The article also outlines the limitations of both domestic and foreign approaches to literary studies and questions the validity of concerns about Western methodologies.
2025-09-05T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/589Notebooks: Homzyn Borys Volodymyrovych (1887) (F. 3907, Op. 1, f. 9), Central State Archives of Supreme Bodies of Power and Government of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine.2025-08-11T15:57:10+00:00Borys Volodymyrovych Homzynsententiae2000@gmail.com
Notebooks of Borys Homzyn.
2025-08-11T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/579A Theory of Justice (Trans. from Eng. by Oleksandr Mokrovolskyi): Kyiv, Osnovy, 2001, 822 p.2025-08-11T13:07:33+00:00John Rawlssententiae2000@gmail.comOleksandr Mokrovolskyisententiae2000@gmail.com
Ukrainian translation of John Rawls's book «A Theory of Justice» made by Oleksandr Mokrovolskyi.
2025-08-11T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/596Vasyl Semenovych Lisovyi. The situation of the global world today is examined both in its cultural and historical genealogy in the context of modern civilization and in the radical social and anthropological innovations that determine the current structure of human life. Particular attention is paid to the «power of reason» as an integrative expression of the modern premises of global reality and its undermining and refutation by the global information environment. The author puts forward the concept of information power as the newest universal force that determines the order of human existence and establishes a new anthropological type – the singularity. The study concludes with an analysis of the peculiarities of political self-determination of modern Ukraine in the context of global self-determination of modern Ukraine relating to global transformations.

Contents

Introduction

Chapter 1: The idea and theme of power in philosophical discourse

Chapter 2. A.sententiae2000@gmail.com
The newspaper article presents an episode from Dmytro Chyzhevskyi's professional biography. According to the author, in 1945 Chyzhevskyi was to take up the position of contract professor at the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Marburg, but this department was suddenly moved to Frankfurt. Despite appeals from students to keep the department in Marburg, the Minister of Hesse questioned Chyzhevskyi's academic qualifications. In his own article in the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper, Minister Stein accused him of collaborating with Soviet officials. According to the author of the publication, the conflict was caused by the desire to remove Chyzhevskyi as a «foreigner» and replace him with a German specialist.
2025-08-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/568Michel Foucault: a dialogue about power In Krytyka, No. 1-2 (51-52), 2002, pp. 11-13.2025-08-09T12:42:58+00:00Oleksii Shevchenkosententiae2000@gmail.com
According to the author, the reception of Michel Foucault's philosophy in the CIS is significantly distorted. The article substantiates the thesis that Foucault's intellectual project is in opposition to the key provisions of leftist ideology. The author highlights the following typical features of the latter: the basic opposition between «direct/artificial», the understanding of lies as the language of power, the existence of a scenario of radical liberation from coercive relations, and the universalization of the idea of the common. In contrast, according to the author's observations, Foucault's philosophy can be distinguished by a number of meta-concepts that attest to its opposition to leftist mythology: the interpretation of man as a product of power relations, the rejection of the postulate of ideology as «false consciousness», the presence of a scenario of salvation through philosophy, and the presence of fundamental nominalism. The author warns that borrowing individual elements of Foucault's concept of power without reconstructing his holistic philosophical position leads to misinterpretations in the study of Soviet and post-communist statehood.
2025-08-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/566Monarchy and republic: Petrograd, Vydannia petrohradskoho komitetu [Publication of the Petrograd Committee], 1917, 16 p.2025-08-09T11:59:09+00:00Panas Fedenkosententiae2000@gmail.com
In the brochure, the author provides a concise overview of the concepts of monarchy and republic in the European context, emphasizing the differences between the monarchical systems of Russia and European states. In his opinion, the emergence of constitutional monarchy in Europe was the result of revolutionary changes carried out by a coalition of the bourgeoisie and the working class. At the same time, the preservation of the institution of monarchy under a constitutional system is seen as a form of protection for the class interests of capitalists who, according to the author, seek to secure their land holdings. Despite the introduction of a constitution in the Russian Empire in 1905, the author emphasizes the preservation of the absolutist nature of the Russian monarchy.

In the political sphere, the author advocates the establishment of a democratic, or people's, republic in Ukraine, equating these concepts. He emphasizes the need for free expression of the will of the people, guarantees of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, as well as the introduction of public assemblies and the creation of associations. In the context of the upcoming Constituent Assembly, the author calls for support for candidates from the Social Democratic Party.
2025-08-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/565Infected by elitism In Krytyka, No. 1-2 (75-76), 2004, pp. 29-30.2025-08-08T12:48:49+00:00Andrii Riepasententiae2000@gmail.com
In this article, the author draws attention to the growth of elitist tendencies among contemporary intellectuals. They are increasingly focused on reflecting on their own conditions of existence, pushing the desire for social transformation into the background. Such elitism manifests itself in a strategy of symbolically distancing oneself from «others» and constructing a sense of intellectual superiority. Particular attention is paid to the phenomenon of irony as a self-sufficient rhetorical position that serves as a means of self-affirmation rather than critical analysis. The phenomenon of so-called «intellectual racism» is also considered—the categorical rejection of views and practices that do not correspond to the norms and ideas of a particular intellectual environment.
2025-08-08T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/563Amnesty and amnesia In Krytyka, No. 5 (31), 2000, pp. 11-15.2025-07-22T07:42:22+00:00Alain Besanconsententiae2000@gmail.com
The article is based on a 1999 lecture by Alain Besancon at the University of Warsaw. The text consists of nine parts. Besancon criticizes our asymmetrical perception of communism and Nazism: while there is a “hypermnesia” about the crimes of Nazism, the crimes of communism are subjected to amnesia and amnesty. Referring to Raoul Hilberg's The Destruction of the European Jews, he compares Nazism and the Soviet version of communism. It is argued that the means common to Nazism and communism were expropriation, exile in concentration camps, mobile extermination operations, and deportation. Unlike the Nazis, the communist government did not create death camps and used such means of destruction as judicial reprisals and famine. While the crimes of Nazism targeted specific social groups, virtually anyone could become an enemy in the eyes of the communist regime. Besancon examines the ideologies of Nazism and Communism from a theological perspective, arguing that they both contain the secularized idea of Christian messiahship, Pelagianism, and elements of Gnosticism. The article concludes with his reflections on the uniqueness of the Shoah.
2025-07-22T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/560Whose post‐colonialism and whose postmodernism? In her article, the author argues that postmodernism is largely a purely Western cultural phenomenon. She criticizes postmodern theorists for separating literary discourse from the rest of social discourse and ignoring the epistemological privilege of belonging to the dominant culture. She challenges the concept of «postcolonial literature» as one that implies the monolithicity of non-Western literary traditions. The binary vision of the metropolis and the colonies as center and margin, common in postcolonial studies, is questioned. Mukherjee emphasizes the need for postcolonial literatures to reject opposing themselves to Western imperial textuality as a way of self-determination.

Translation from English: Mariia Zubrytska for «Vpered»

Original: Arun P. In his article, Said discusses Samuel Huntington’s concept of the «Clash of Civilizations», which has gained renewed interest among public intellectuals and the mainstream media since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. It is argued that Huntington offers an overly simplistic view of the dynamics of civilizational relations, focusing on the antagonistic struggle between the collective West and Islam. This reductionist approach, according to the author, does not reflect the diversity of historical relations between civilizations and cements in the public consciousness a prejudiced idea of the Islamic tradition by diminishing its cultural influence along with its aesthetic and intellectual aspects. Said sees the concept of the «Clash of Civilizations» as a tool for increasing moral panic rather than an effective way to navigate the modern world.
2025-07-22T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/561The conservative face of classical liberalism In Krytyka, No. 4 (42), 2001, pp. 29-32.2025-07-22T07:37:17+00:00Hennadii Aliaievsententiae2000@gmail.com
Hennadii Aliaiev's article consists of six parts: 1) The way to the reader; 2) The liberal-conservative paradigm; 3) Tradition and law; 4) Separation of the authority: legislation and government; 5) Partisan elections and the brutality of politics; 6) Liberal or conservative?

The first part contains the author's remarks on two editions of Ukrainian translations of Friedrich von Haiek's Law, Legislation and Liberty, dedicated to the centenary of the Austro-British economist.

In the second part, the author defines von Haiek's political views as «liberal conservatism». Kutuiev focuses on the internal contradictions within the Leninist model of modernization, particularly the unresolved antagonism between the rational and charismatic dimensions of political time. Central attention is given to the concept of «charismatic impersonality» as an attempt to overcome this antagonism through the party’s organizational structures. The analysis centers on the processes of institutionalizing the revolutionary subject and their impact on the nature of Soviet politics and culture. The article also presents a comparative overview of alternative Marxist interpretations of time, represented by the ideas of Trotsky, Bukharin, and Stalin. It is argued that Leninism’s inability to establish an effective mechanism for the cultural internalization of the new order became a key factor in its historical limitations.
2025-07-21T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/556Eurasian Invasion: An Ideology Without Borders In Krytyka, No. 3 (41), 2001, pp. 6–9.2025-07-21T08:28:18+00:00Iryna Zhdanovasententiae2000@gmail.com
Irina Zhdanova's article is devoted to the problem of institutionalizing marginal imperial ideas in contemporary Russian political discourse. The author analyzes how the concept of Eurasianism, as interpreted by Alexander Duhin, is gradually losing its status as a radical ideology and gaining influence among state authorities. The study traces how Eurasian rhetoric, combining geopolitical reductionism, nationalist mythology, and occult motifs, has become a means of legitimizing Russia's neo-imperial policy toward neighboring states, primarily Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to how Ukrainian statehood is presented in Eurasian discourse not as an independent political reality, but as a geopolitical misunderstanding that needs to be «corrected». The article proves that Eurasian ideology, despite its extremist nature, is capable of integrating into official rhetoric and becoming an instrument of political mobilization. Zhdanova emphasizes that behind the apparent pragmatism of Russia's foreign policy lies a consistent strategy of ideological expansion, combining narratives of revanchism, cultural mission, and spatial fatalism.
2025-07-21T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/557The End of the Giedroyć Era In Krytyka, No. 10 (36), 2000, pp. 22–23.2025-07-21T08:36:53+00:00Bogumiła Berdychowskasententiae2000@gmail.com
The material is an analytical essay by Bogumiła Berdychowska on the figure of Jerzy Giedroyć, editor of the emigration magazine Kultura, in the context of Ukrainian-Polish relations and the ideological transformation of Polish political culture. At the center of the analysis is Giedroyć’s strategy of overcoming historical myths, internationalizing the Ukrainian question, and recognizing national borders as a precondition for a democratic future. Special attention is given to the role of Kultura in popularizing Ukrainian literature and humanistic thought among Polish readers. Bohdanov stresses the need to create a new type of art—collectivist in form and proletarian in content, closely linked to the labor process. The author notes the decline of the book market and Ukrainian media at that time. The article includes a debate with Ukrainian intellectuals: Oksana Zabuzhko, Mykola Knyazhytskyi, and others. According to Hrytsenko, the economic crisis, the development of information technology, and significant competition have profoundly affected the situation of publishing houses and other cultural institutions. The text clearly outlines the obstacles that hindered the development of Ukrainian book publishing. According to the author, the solution to the problem lies in the reception of the experience of other countries that is relevant to the Ukrainian context. The article contains reflections on the limits and needs of contemporary national culture and politics.
2025-07-18T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/534The Problem of the Ukrainian Intelligentsia.

2025-07-17T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/535Authority and opposition in the «post-cassette society» In Krytyka, No. 5 (43), 2001, pp. 4-5.2025-07-17T19:01:02+00:00Yevhen Golovakhasententiae2000@gmail.com
The article analyzes the consequences of the relationship between the government and the opposition in the political situation in Ukraine after the cassette scandal. The author examines whether the opposition is capable of constructive conflict with the authorities, basing on the following aspects: 1) the presence of a constructive ideology, 2) the presence of public support, and 3) the capacity to organize protest actions.

Eventually, Yevhen Golovakha expresses a warning that the Communist Party may gain a popular advantage under the conditions of political instability caused by the cassette scandal. Finally, the article presents the author's pessimistic vision of Ukraine's political future, where the democratic perspective of Ukrainian society may be lost.
2025-07-17T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Archivum Sententiarum (digital version)https://ars.vntu.edu.ua/index.php/ars/catalog/book/533Heraclitus (Trans. from Anc.
