Friedrich Engels
Synopsis
The work “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State” was first published in 1884 in German. It was written on the basis of Karl Marx's manuscript notes on the work of the American ethnologist Lewis Morgan, “Ancient Society” (1877). Drawing on the materialist conception of history, Engels traces the development of human society from primitive communism through the emergence of the patriarchal family, private property, and class society to the formation of the state as an instrument of domination by the economically ruling class. The translator is not indicated.
