The work is devoted to understanding the role of the Ukrainian intelligentsia and its essential purpose. The author examines the concept of “intelligentsia” in psychological and sociological dimensions, particularly in the context of Vyacheslav Lypynskyi's philosophical concept.

According to Lypynskyi, the intelligentsia is incapable of politics as practical action, but only of creating ideology through the exploitation of the national idea. Mykola Shlemkevych opposes this approach, criticizing the gap between political theory and practice. Instead, the work emphasizes that the vocation of the intelligentsia is not only to articulate ideology, but also to embody the will of the people, without which the establishment of Ukrainian statehood is impossible.

The author pays special attention to the intelligentsia as the bearer of culture and a sign of civilizational maturity. In the conclusion, the author raises the issue of the decline of this social stratum, which, in his opinion, is caused by the betrayal of its own calling.
