Synopsis

In the article, Boyko-Blokhin criticizes the image of Taras Shevchenko created by the Bolsheviks. He points to the decline of Shevchenko studies in the Soviet Union, caused by the repression of leading Ukrainian Shevchenko scholars and the prohibition of publishing of their thematic works. Boyko-Blokhin emphasizes that the idea of social struggle, exploited by the Bolsheviks, is not central to Shevchenko's work but serves only as a means to achieve the liberation of the Ukrainian people. The author also considered Shevchenko a revolutionary, but solely as a precursor to the Ukrainian revolutionary movement of 1917-1919.
