The article offers a brief overview of Romano Guardini’s book Der Tod des Sokrates (The Death of Socrates) and reflections by Kyrylo Mytrovych inspired by its themes. Mytrovych describes the structure of the book, which consists of Guardini’s translations of Plato’s dialogues and his accompanying commentaries, which the author of the article refers to as a “unique shared reading of Plato’s works”.
In a separate section, Mytrovych explores the Socratic problem of death, highlighting its resonance with existentialist philosophy. Death is presented as a passage to a higher reality, while true knowledge and moral virtues are formed by the soul rather than the body. For Mytrovych, Socrates becomes a symbol of truth, as he consciously accepts death for the sake of higher justice and fidelity to his calling.
