Synopsis

Volodymyr Yaniv's article provides an overview of Mykola Shlemkevych's ethnopsychological views on Ukrainians. Ukrainians are presented as a cohesive historical community with deep cultural and political traditions—from the Trypillian civilization to the Cossack era. Ideas about popular monarchy, the democratic principles of the Cossacks, and the image of Ukraine as an agrarian culture occupy a special place in the conception of national character. The image of Shevchenko as a spokesman for national identity is also in focus. The article illustrates Shlemkevych's place in the Ukrainian ethnopsychological tradition and the formation of the image of the «Ukrainian soul».
