The article provides an analytical overview of three works by Ukrainian writers, united by a common theme — the literary representation of demonological motifs in Ukrainian literature and cultural context. Particular attention is paid to the use of mythological figures such as "devils," "witches," and "demons" in everyday contexts. The introductory section provides a brief review of the book Malleus Maleficarum and discusses examples of demonic motifs in the works of various Ukrainian writers.
The second part of the article is devoted to the analysis of two novellas by Valerii Shevchuk — The Snake-Woman and Hunchback Zoia. The author focuses on the image of the witch-woman and her connection to the psychological states of other characters.
The final and largest part of the article presents a review of Oksana Zabuzhko’s novel Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex, which sparked a public debate between the author and Zabuzhko in subsequent issues of the journal Krytyka. The author examines the protagonist (as the author’s alter ego) through the lens of the witch archetype, focusing on Zabuzhko’s personal experiences and the autobiographical elements of the novel.
