The article analyses the book On the Appearance of the Word by Tamara Hundorova. The researcher's approach to the study of the «protomodern» period (1890-1910s), which developed in the context of a conflict between inorganically assimilated European influences and the dominant folk discourse, is critically reviewed. The adequacy of the applied methodology (poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, phenomenology and semiotics of the text) and the effectiveness of the study for Ukrainian literary studies are questioned.
