The article analyses the book Screen Arts in the Socio-Cultural Processes of the Twentieth Century by Vadym Skurativskyi. The researcher's approach to the study of the history of cinema, television and video in the context of New European culture is considered. The methodology of the author, who focuses on the "tectonic processes" of cultural evolution rather than on the analysis of selected works, is critically evaluated. The author offers an interpretation of the decline of cinema as a result of the exhaustion of its potential in the conflict between life and death in the era of nuclear weapons and mass destruction.
