Synopsis

The article analyzes the psychological and economic foundations of nostalgia for the Soviet past in post-Soviet countries. Two different approaches to the perception of the Soviet legacy are critically examined through responses to Serhii Kovalev’s articles: a return to the Soviet order and the idealisation of the pre-revolutionary order. The possibility of returning to the former regime is questioned, and the inevitability of its collapse is substantiated. It is proposed to form an understanding that a return to the “communist utopia” is impossible given the economic reality.
