The article analyses the cultural and anthropological types of Ukrainian society in the context of the 1999 presidential elections. The transformation of the Soviet "hyper-social individual" into new types of post-Soviet individuals is critically examined. The phenomenon of the oligarchic society is analysed as a form of post-totalitarian order. The necessity of forming a new anthropological type — the “free citizen” — is proposed as an alternative for Ukrainian society, based on the restoration of the diversity of human existence and personal responsibility.
