Synopsis

The article is a review by Serhii Bilenkyi of the book written by Andrzej Walicki The Slavophile controversy. Reviewed book devoted to historical and structural research of 19th-century Russian Slavophilia movement, its representatives, sources and development. The review emphasizes the excessive abstractness of the interpretation of Slavophilia, which in the analyzed work is considered through the prism of the concept of worldview and the opposition between «conservatism and liberalism».

The work creates an ideal type of Slavophile worldview, according to which individual figures are assigned to one of the poles of the «conservatism-liberalism» opposition. The author of the review draws attention to the use of vulgarisms of Soviet criticism in the study, which narrows the possibility of flexible interpretation of figures within the chosen scheme. Finally, he emphasizes the narrative nature of the study, in which «Slavophile» is not considered a mythologem.
