Synopsis

The material is a review by Solomiia Pavlychko of an unpublished book by Ahatanhel Krymskyi What is Modern Ukrainianness?. She focuses on the author as a theorist of nationalism, explaining how he attempts to combine the ideas of humane nationalism with the social democratic concept, which, at the same time, must distance itself from Marxism. The scholar's work is a kind of message to the Ukrainian intelligentsia, which is moving away from the national idea and gravitating towards Russianism. Referring to Karl Kautskyi, August Bebel, and other sociologists, Krymskyi points out the conflict between socialism and nationalism. However, he sought a deeper understanding of the concept of nationalism and the preservation of Ukrainian statehood. Thus, despite the fact that his work remained only in draft form, Solomiia Pavlychko managed to identify the general trend of his thoughts and emphasize the significance of this text in the Ukrainian intellectual context.
