Ours and not ours In Krytyka, No. 11 (61), 2002, pp. 21-22.
Keywords:
nation, national interest, valuesSynopsis
The article is a polemic by Myroslav Popovych with other authors of the journal «Krytyka», particularly with Vasyl Cherepanyn, on the principles of determining national interests. The author refers to sociological literature aiming to clarify the concepts of «nation», «citizen», «civil society» to use them in his argumentation. The main idea of the article is that political and cultural conflicts arise due to differences in values. Accordingly, on author’s opinion, national interests should be viewed through the prism of the values that dominate the world, rather than putting forward the interests of individual communities. In this way, «our» interests will concern every citizen, which will allow us to overcome separateness in Ukraine and in the world at large.
