Synopsis

The article consists of Heorhii Kasianov's review of Bohdan Kravchenko's work Social Change and National Consciousness in Ukraine in the 20th Century (Osnovy, 1997) and a response to Yaroslav Hrytsak's review of Paradoxes of Ukrainian Modernization (Krytyka, No. 11(25), 1999). The article analyzes the key structural elements of the concept of the formation of Ukrainian national consciousness as presented in Kravchenko's work. The author pays particular attention to the excessive emphasis on socio-economic factors, which, in his opinion, is a manifestation of the general shortcomings of Soviet-Marxist methodology.

In his review, he also argues with Yaroslav Hrytsak, disagreeing with his criticism of the “modernization” theory as outdated. On the contrary, the author emphasizes that this concept is a comprehensive and interesting interpretation of the process of nation formation.
