Synopsis

The material is a presentation read by Dmytro Chyzhevskyi at a meeting of the Ancient History Section of the Ukrainian Free Academy in the United States of America on March 13, 1955. The author investigates early translations – primarily from Greek ancient literature – that circulated in the territory of Ukraine. The publication discusses the reception of foreign translations, as well as early Ukrainian studies of numerous ancient philosophers and writers. Special attention is given to translations related to Plato. An important part of the material is devoted to translations of ancient Greek myths and ancient history, including Roman history. The structure of the study is chronological: from the oldest translations and commentaries to those of the modern era. The main text is written in Ukrainian, with a brief summary in German provided by the author at the end.
