Synopsis

The essay analyzes the political situation in Ukraine in the early 2000s in the context of the "cassette scandal" and the case of journalist Georgiy Gongadze. The author examines the paradox of Ukrainian politics: under formal stability, democratic institutions are being destroyed. The common features of authoritarian tendencies in Ukraine and Russia are analyzed, while key differences are emphasized. Special attention is paid to the resignation of Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko as a symptom of the crisis in the legal space. The author argues that the main problem lies not in the economy, but in the destruction of mechanisms for protecting civil rights. In conclusion, the potential of the opposition movement for democratic change is considered.
