Synopsis

The article is a translation of a text by Arun Mukherjee. In her article, the author argues that postmodernism is largely a purely Western cultural phenomenon. She criticizes postmodern theorists for separating literary discourse from the rest of social discourse and ignoring the epistemological privilege of belonging to the dominant culture.  She challenges the concept of «postcolonial literature» as one that implies the monolithicity of non-Western literary traditions. The binary vision of the metropolis and the colonies as center and margin, common in postcolonial studies, is questioned. Mukherjee emphasizes the need for postcolonial literatures to reject opposing themselves to Western imperial textuality as a way of self-determination.
