Synopsis

The article is devoted to the problem of borrowing Western methodologies in the humanities in Ukraine. The author examines the leading methodologies of Ukrainian and Western literary studies of the 1960s and 1990s, considering the conditions of their emergence in the sociocultural context.

Hundorova emphasizes the obvious fact that Ukrainian humanities lag behind Western methodological trends. According to her observations, Ukrainian scholars tend to reject the latest approaches, which can be explained by their fear of metaphoricality and the legacy of the Soviet literary tradition based on the principles of objectivity and historicism.

The article also outlines the limitations of both domestic and foreign approaches to literary studies and questions the validity of concerns about Western methodologies.
