The article presents the author's understanding of the role and essence of the intellectual. Ivaškevičius outlines his own vision of the characteristic features of intellectual behavior and ways of thinking, and analyzes the factors and peculiarities of the formation of his worldview.

The text takes the form of an essay delivered at the conference «Intellectuals: The Temptation of Silence», held in Minsk in October 2002. Among the participants in the event were Serhii Zhadan and Andrii Khadanovych, whose speeches are published in the same issue of Krytyka.
