In the review, Yevhen Golovakha analyzes two works by Russian sociologists: From Opinions to Understanding by Yurii Levada and Word – Writing – Literature by Borys Dubin. The author examines these works as a chronicle of post-Soviet society based on empirical data from mass surveys. The article explores the crisis of culture and cultural elite in Russia, which manifests in the desacralization of refined culture and the intelligentsia's loss of spiritual orientations. Golovakha analyzes the phenomenon of «post-soviet man» and the concept of «forced democracy». Author evaluates Levada's and Dubin's works as an example of scientific objectivity.
