Synopsis

The article examines the transformation of the role of writers and intellectuals in a globalized world. Said analyzes the merging of the figures of writer and intellectual at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries, when writers perform the functions of social critics. The author considers the impact of electronic media and the internet on the possibilities of intellectual intervention in the public sphere. The author criticizes the dominant discourse of globalization. The work outlines three domains of intellectual struggle: historical memory, coexistence, and justice. The author emphasizes that intellectuals must possess the courage to adequately comprehend and accept the realities of the world.  Translated from English by Kateryna Botanova.
