Communication theory, Western values, civil societySynopsis
The article presents Anton Finko's polemic with Oleksii Shevchenko regarding Jürgen Habermas's communicative theory and his work “Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere” (Lviv, translated from German by Anatolii Onyshko, 2000). The author of the article emphasizes that Oleksii Shevchenko's position is based on exposing the internal repressiveness of Habermas's theory of communication, which calls into question the subject's ability to rationally restrain themselves. Anton Finko, on the other hand, argues that the universal normativity criticized by his opponent is not a form of coercion, but rather aims to affirm the autonomous ability of individuals to make free and rational choices within the framework of social interaction.
