Synopsis

The material is a translation of a publication for Z Magazine, based on a lecture given by Chomsky on November 10, 2001, at the Chennai Music Academy. The article focuses on the destructive consequences of US foreign and domestic policy. According to Chomsky, the goal of fighting terrorism, proclaimed by the US government after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, became a pretext for the accumulation of nuclear weapons with the prospect of transferring the arms race into space. He criticizes the asymmetrical coverage of the events of September 11 compared to the violations of international law by the US. Chomsky undermines the widespread belief that terrorist means are used mainly by countries deprived of global political and economic leverage. He names countries such as the US and the UK as centers of global terrorism. Neoliberal globalization is seen as reinforcing social inequality on both local and international levels. Despite the general pessimism of Chomsky's arguments, the article concludes with a positive assessment of the possibility of developing compassion and solidarity in societies, supported by the example of numerous human rights movements.
