This article is a translation from Russian of Yurii Levada's publication «Notes on the ‘Generation Problem’». In it, the author draws on the results of sociological research to analyze the causes and specifics of the phenomenon of the “generation gap” in Russian society, which manifests itself in the confrontation between representatives of the dominant social order and groups of young people oriented toward alternative value systems.

In the concluding part, Levada concludes that the future of society is determined not so much by young people themselves as by the ability of social institutions to guide its development. According to the author, it is institutional influence that can ensure the formation of a “mature” society and overcome the value and worldview primitivism inherent in young people.
