Synopsis

The paper analyzes the concept of the “Ukrainian race” and outlines two main ways of understanding it: 1) external, which consists in perceiving the history and culture of Ukraine through the prism of the values and worldviews of other peoples (races); 2) internal, based on an awareness of the uniqueness of the psychology, traditions, and spiritual destiny of the Ukrainian people.

The concept of the “Ukrainian race” as interpreted by Yurii Lypa appears as an intellectual tool for self-identification and affirmation of national distinctiveness. For the author, it serves a dual function: on the one hand, it contributes to the expansion of knowledge about one's own people and culture, and on the other, it protects them from destructive external influences.

To support his views, Lypa refers to Vadym Shcherbakivskyi's theory of protohistory, which focuses on establishing physical and spiritual connections between the peoples who inhabited the territory of Ukraine in different historical periods. Based on these connections, Shcherbakivskyi proves the continuity of the Ukrainian people's existence in one territory over several millennia, defines Ukraine as an independent geopolitical unit, and traces the formation of its cultural traditions and mental characteristics. Based on these conclusions, Lypa substantiates the idea of the existence of the Ukrainian race, contrasting his concept of racism with the materialistic doctrine of the “class struggle” of dialectical materialism.
