The material presents Mykhailo Braichevskyi’s views on Viktor Petrov as a scientist engaged in various fields. The author analyzes the general features of twentieth-century science. The text contains attempts to reflect on the reasons for the emergence of universal humanities methodologies. According to the author, the methods of history and archaeology require not only specialized but also general, and to some extent philosophical, knowledge and skills. Braichevskyi identifies this approach in the works of Viktor Petrov. The article also emphasizes the significant role of linguistics in shaping the methodology of a modern scientist. Furthermore, the author stresses the methodological necessity of knowledge from related disciplines, which allows history to be enriched with valuable and reliable material.
