The article presents Myroslav Popovych’s reflections on the Volhynia tragedy of 1943–1944. The author problematizes the Ukrainian society’s attitude toward the negative episodes of its history. The text raises questions of historical and national identities, as well as examines the political features of contemporary institutions of memory. The philosopher argues that the concept of collective responsibility is outdated. The main thesis of the text is the establishment of the principle of individual responsibility, based on a conscious choice of identity and a focus on modern forms of communication, the culture of memory, and practices of mutual understanding – primarily in relations with Polish society.
