The article presents Volodymyr Fadeiev’s reflections on Ukrainian humanities at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The text consists of four chapters. In the begining, the author outlines the general state of culture and politics. Further, he examined the impact of historical circumstances on the trends of humanities studies. According to Fadeiev, researchers of different generations reproduce distinct types of Ukrainian identity, ranging from a stable historical one to a contemporary emigrant identity. By distinguishing universal intellectuals and specialists in specific fields of the humanities, the author criticizes the firsts for ignoring the current challenges and the needs of society.
