Synopsis

In the article, the author reflects on the concepts of “intellectual” and “intelligentsia,” attempting to define their place in Ukrainian cultural and social life. He emphasizes the role of the Soviet past and other social shifts and transformations at the turn of the 20th to the 21st century in shaping intellectual life in Ukraine. Furthermore, the author introduces the term “cynical intellectuals,” which, in his view, represents a new problematic phenomenon within the Ukrainian intellectual environment.
