Synopsis

In this article, the author argues with Maksym Strikha on the issue of whether the title of candidate of sciences corresponds to the Western PhD degree. The publication is a continuation of the discussion that began in the pages of Krytyka in issue No. 12 for 2007.

The author insists that these two qualifications belong to different academic categories and should not be equated. In his opinion, the intention to equate them actually boils down to treating the PhD as a formal label, which negates its substantive aspects. Therefore, according to the author, a constructive step would be to develop full-fledged PhD programs in local universities, similar to the one that was launched at NaUKMA.
