Synopsis

The article analyzes the relationship between liberalism and nationalism through the prism of John Rawls's concept, set out in his work The Law of Peoples. The author argues that the principles proposed by Rawls inevitably support the independence of liberal peoples in the liberal world, but leave unresolved the problem of their compatibility with nationalism. The paper argues that, despite the complexity and lack of a clear answer, there are strong conceptual and practical grounds for considering liberalism and nationalism as compatible phenomena. Additionally, the empirical confirmation of this thesis is emphasized on the example of national liberation movements in post-Soviet countries. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the relationship between liberalism and nationalism is an important issue that requires further attention from modern political philosophy.
