Synopsis

Friedrich Schelling's work "On The Relation Between The Plastic Arts And Nature" investigates the antinomy between art and nature. The author substantiates the conception of nature's creative force as active knowledge and the necessity for the artist's spiritual mastery of nature's productive forces. The argumentation of the work unfolds through constant appeals to ancient culture, particularly to Greek art as a paradigm for achieving the synthesis of beauty and grace.

Fragments of the work have been translated from German by Dariia Syroiid based on the edition: Schelling F. W. J. Über das Verhältnis der bildenden Künste zu der Natur. Eingeleitet und herausgegeben von Lucia Sziborsky. – Hamburg: Felix Meiner Verlag, 1983. The translation is accompanied by footnotes.
