Friedrich Schelling's work "On the Essence of German Science" reveals his conception of the national character of German philosophy and science. The author analyzes the specificity of German intellectual development from the religious reformation of the XVI century to the Kantian revolution. Particular attention is devoted to the critique of dualistic thinking and the substantiation of the necessity for synthesis between spiritual and natural principles. Schelling formulates the task of the German spirit as the revival of religion through the highest science and the achievement of synthetic knowledge regarding nature and spirit.

Fragments of the work have been translated from German by Dariia Syroiid based on the edition: Die Deutschen Romantiker, In Zwei Bänden. Bd. 1. –  Salzburg: Das Berglamd-Buch, 1964. The translation is accompanied by footnotes.
