This text is a review of the book Sowjetische Erbe und ukrainische Nation. Das Museum der Geschichte des Zaporoger Kosakentums auf der Insel Chortycia, by the German author Christian Ganzer, published in the series “Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society”. The review unfolds through an exploration of the problem of historical memory within Ukrainian national discourse. Its main focus is on museum culture, which serves as a medium for representing the national narrative and its dominant motifs. Ganzer examines how the Soviet presentation of Ukrainian history was transformed in the post-Soviet period, using as an example the conversion of the Museum of the History of Zaporizhzhia into the Museum of the History of Ukrainian Cossacks. Ganzer concludes that there is a similarity between the means of artistic expression and the narrative structure of the work, and the author of this review generally agrees with this conclusion.
