Synopsis

In this article, Yuliia Yemets-Dobronosova examines various problematic aspects of the concepts of the Stranger and strangerness. She begins by comparing the Stranger and the Other as related notions used to define the boundaries of one’s own reality. To analyze the states of the Stranger and the Other in more concrete terms, she turns to the works of Emmanuel Todd (After the Empire: The Breakdown of the American Order) and Étienne Balibar (We, the People of Europe? Reflections on Transnational Citizenship). In addition, the author analyses the concept of the Stranger in psychoanalytic studies, particularly through the ideas of Julia Kristeva. In conclusion, she synthesizes the previously discussed ideas and returns to the problem of the artificial construction of the Stranger as a process of defining one’s own reality.
