Synopsis

In the article, Heorhii Kasianov analyzes the phenomenon of the recurrence of historical and cultural-identity patterns in contemporary Ukraine, which creates a sense of déjà vu in the nation's self-perception. The author argues that the two fundamental components of the nation – culture and the state – remain in a condition that does not demonstrate the full realization of the project of modernity. Despite expectations that the cultural Ukrainian nation, having gained "its own" state, would finally realize its social and cultural-political rights, these expectations have been only partially fulfilled.

Kasianov emphasizes that modern Ukrainian identity continues to develop according to the patterns of past decades, reproducing old myths and discourses grounded in ressentiment. Through the metaphor of deja vu, the author highlights the cyclical nature of Ukraine's historical experience and the necessity of its critical re-evaluation for the renewal of the national project.
