Synopsis

The article analyzes the phenomenon of monuments in its twofold dimension: as materialized carriers of collective memory and as instruments of state policy for shaping collective identity. The study provides a retrospective overview of the emergence of monuments in Donetsk and the narrative models they represented. It shows that these two aspects – spontaneous and socially rooted memory and state memorial policy – come into direct confrontation, in particular through mechanisms of displacement of unofficial memory by official memory. This dynamic leads to the marginalization and oblivion of materialized forms of unconventional collective memory.
