Synopsis

The article analyzes monuments primarily as ideological objects designed to ensure that the masses assimilate the necessary value orientations. Particular attention is paid to the paradoxical situation in the Russian memorial environment, where since 1991 there has been both an artistic and thematic break with previous tradition and a reactivation of Soviet symbols and visual images against the backdrop of growing nostalgia for the Soviet past and the absence of other consolidating factors. The conclusion is made that there is no prospect of audience empathy for such monuments, which should naturally lead to a reorientation towards new types of monuments.
