Synopsis

The article considers the possibility of rethinking the concept of Eastern Europe so that it becomes part of Ukraine's regional identity. These prospects are linked both to the possibility of improving the image of the concept itself and to the issue of othering discourse, i.e., defining the Other necessary for establishing one's own identity. In this context, two key dimensions are highlighted:  local policy – related to the potential benefit for Ukraine in forming a reliable consolidating instrument capable of neutralizing the influence of the Russian, Soviet, and Austro-Hungarian legacies; and foreign policy – related to the benefit for the EU, which consists in the clear spatial and symbolic localization of Ukraine on the European map. It is concluded that the adoption of the concept of Eastern Europe as a state consolidation strategy can be interpreted as Ukraine's return to itself.
