The material takes the form of a polemical article in which Hrabovych responds to a letter published in the journal Literaturna Ukraina. The author analyzes the situation surrounding the review by Sofiia Hrachova and Stepan Zakharkin of the article “The Humanism of Taras Shevchenko,” which was challenged by Leonid Ushkalov. The article offers a historical and comparative analysis of the concept of humanism, with particular attention to the notion of “socialist humanism” in the context of its negative ideological bias. Special emphasis is placed on examining the relationship between the idea of humanism and the figure of Taras Shevchenko. In this sense, the material can be seen as an attempt to deconstruct humanism within the framework of interpretations of Shevchenko’s work. In the concluding section, the author summarizes his response to Ushkalov’s open letter and problematizes the approaches to the theme of humanism presented in the Shevchenko Encyclopedia, drawing attention to the methodological and interpretive limitations of such an approach.
