The article analyzes the mechanisms of constructing national identity by the intellectual elite. The author examines the successive stages of this process: from archeographic work and publication of ancient texts through writing national history to the creation by a poet-mythmaker of a symbolic code of collective identity. Ponomariov emphasizes the interdependence of individual and collective identities.
