This text is a translation by Halyna Ilnytska of an article by the American journalist and researcher James Gleick. It is devoted to a review of the book by physicist Lee Smolin, “Time Reborn: From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe”. According to the author of the article, Smolin’s ideas completely overturn the established understanding of the nature of time, shaped jointly by Albert Einstein, Hermann Minkowski, and H. G. Wells. Smolin insists on the reality of time and on the irrefutability of experiencing its passage. Among the causes of the mistaken understanding of the nature of time are the “mathematization” of the concept of time, which led to a sense of its illusory character; belief in universal timeless laws of nature; and the elevation of space as something truly existing. His work itself proposes a program for further research that restores the understanding of time as real.
