Synopsis

The article is a review of two documentary collections published by Tempora press: “Ukrainian Intelligentsia and Power: Summaries of the Secret Department of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR, 1927–1929” (ed. V. Danylenko, 2012) and “Verdict on the Ukrainian Revolution: The Case of the CC of the UPSR” (eds. T. Ostashko, S. Kokin, 2013). Both collections draw on documents from the Branch State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine and illuminate the Bolshevik mechanisms of political control over the Ukrainian intelligentsia during the 1920s. The author examines the methods used to fabricate show trials and analyzes the operations of the GPU's Secret Department. Shapoval reveals the Chekist apparatus's deliberate strategy of destroying or demoralizing the Ukrainian intelligentsia. To this end, provocateurs were deployed and testimony was manipulated. Any expression of national identity was ideologically branded as "chauvinism."
