Synopsis

The material is a review of Herbert Marcuse’s book “One-Dimensional Man”. The author acknowledges Marcuse’s thorough analysis of such phenomena of advanced industrial society as war propaganda, the culture of excessive consumption, and media self-censorship. At the same time, he argues that in his critique of technological society, Marcuse adopts a moralistic-utopian stance. The text focuses on the book’s neglect of the contradiction between the reduction of working hours and the increase in leisure time inherent in capitalism. The author views the book’s disregard for class analysis and its methodological ambiguity as a problem.
