Synopsis

Mykola Shlemkevych's work analyzes the historical interactions and conflicts of Ukrainian political forces that determined the fate of the national movement in the period 1917-1921. The author identifies three key political trends: Ukrainian monarchism, Ukrainian democracy, and the idea of leadership. He emphasizes the contradictory attitude of each force towards the opposite, which in turn led to internal conflicts and civil fragmentation, especially during the Ukrainian Revolution. Shlemkevych emphasizes that the victory of one force over another does not guarantee the national good, and totalitarianism and statelessness are dangerous consequences.

The main idea of the work is the need for "synthesis", that is, the unification of different political principles through constructive dialogue and mutual use of the positive experience of each tradition. Synthesis, in the author's opinion, is not a mechanical mixing of ideas, but a constructive dialogue and mutual unification of the positive from each political tradition for the common service of the people. This approach, in the author's opinion, is capable of ensuring state stability and spiritual revival of the Ukrainian people, instead of constant internal confrontation.

Therefore, Shlemkevych's work not only analyzes historical events, but also offers a philosophical understanding of national unity.
