Outline of the History of Philosophy in Ukraine is a collective monograph prepared by the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR with the participation of leading scholars and university lecturers of the republic. The publication represents an attempt at a systematic presentation of the history of philosophical thought on Ukrainian lands in the context of the general historical development of society and the Marxist-Leninist methodology dominant in Soviet humanities.
The work traces the evolution of philosophical and sociopolitical ideas from the period of Kyivan Rus, through the development of philosophical thought during feudalism, the early modern era, and capitalism, to the emergence and institutionalization of Marxist-Leninist philosophy in Ukraine in the twentieth century. Considerable attention is devoted to educational and scholarly centers, particularly Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, as well as to thinkers representing various stages of the intellectual tradition.
The methodological foundation of the work is historical materialism, which determines its emphasis on the socioeconomic factors of philosophical development and its class-conditioned nature. A special place is given to the formation and development of Marxist philosophy as the leading ideological current of the Soviet period.
The publication has reference and synthetic value and reflects the level of development of Soviet historiography of philosophy.
