Synopsis

The article analyzes the conflicts within the Ukrainian diaspora in America, prompted by two events: the response of cultural figures to an appeal from Soviet Ukraine and the address of a representative of the Ukrainian SSR at Rutgers University. The author criticizes the demagogic methods employed by a segment of the community, which resorted to emotional pressure and accusations of "Soviet sympathies" rather than reasoned discussion. Mykola Shlemkevych argues that internal ideological disagreements are natural and beneficial for the development of society, provided they take the form of substantive intellectual discourse. The author contrasts the independent thinking of the intelligentsia and student community with outdated forms of monopolistic leadership, and calls for vigilance against the exploitation of internal contradictions by adversaries.
