Synopsis

The work calls for tracing the roots of Ukrainian statehood not in democratic Galicianism or "populist" narodnytsvo, but in the chivalric, strong-willed, and aristocratic traditions of Kyivan Rus and the Hetmanate. It is precisely these historical periods that are characterized by an active and successful foreign policy. A distinct place in this inquiry is occupied by Western European cultural influences, which are contrasted with Russian ones. In conclusion, the author argues that historical tradition is defined by the will to power and independence of specific individuals rather than by the passivity of the masses.
