Dontsov emphasizes the necessity of upholding ancient traditions, contrasting them with tendencies of inferiority that undermine national interests. The author subjects to criticism the internal destructive forces within the Ukrainian émigré community, which he metaphorically designates as "shashil" — an image inspired by the lines of Taras Shevchenko. In the post-war period, these forces lost their heroic spirit and came to prefer assimilation among other nations over the struggle for Ukrainian statehood.
